RING MAGAZINE: Pacquiao is now Ring Mag's No. 1 welterweight

MANILA, Philippines — New World Boxing Council (WBC) super welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao has claimed the top spot in the Ring Magazine's welterweight list, relegating undefeated Floyd Mayweather Jr. to second among the world best 147-pound fighters.

The Ring Magazine, considered as the "bible of boxing," considers Pacquiao to be its best boxer for the welterweight division following his masterful dismantling of Mexico's Antonio Margarito over the weekend.
Pacquiao achieved the victory at the 150-pound catch weight.

“Due to the fact that Manny Pacquiao is more active and weighed in as a welterweight for the Antonio Margarito victory, he has overtaken Floyd Mayweather,” The Ring’s editor-in-chief, Nigel Collins, said in RingTV.com.

Pacquiao, also the reigning World Boxing Organization (WBO) welterweight champion, tipped the scales at 144.6 pounds at the official weigh-in the day before the fight.

The Ring Magazine's editorial board said Pacquiao’s dominance over Margarito, despite weighing as a welterweight, is an accomplishment that enhanced his standing in the 147-pound division.

The editorial board also explained that the Filipino's super welterweight victory over the Mexican has no effect on the magazine's 154-pound ratings because Margarito is unranked as a super welterweight.

“The WBC junior middleweight belt at stake will look nice in Manny’s trophy case, but really doesn’t mean very much, especially as Margarito was unranked by The Ring going into the fight,” Collins said.

Aside from being the top welterweight, Pacquiao also enjoys the stature of being the Ring Magazine's pound-for-pound champion.
